Seasonal Highlights at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Hampshire

Unusual Australian Beauty

The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is delighted to have seen the full flowering of a new Australian plant for the first time since it was planted out. Banksia integrifolia ssp. monticola, also known as the Coast Banksia or the Australian White Honeysuckle, is a shrubby tree only found in Australia and Tasmania. It is only hardy in mild locations of the UK and therefore not commonly grown outside. When it grows well, it produces its flower-heads, the size of a large cotton reel, in early winter.

Banksia is one of the most famous plant groups known from Australia. Its flowers are often pollinated by birds and small mammals. Its seed cones are very hard and mostly designed to survive fire. The flower colour of the genus varies from white to shades of green and brown, orange and bright red.

Seed that produced our plant was collected in Tasmania almost 9 years ago. It was collected at 1200 meter altitude, thus our plant is expected to be more cold hardy than some others. Seed was collected from a 6 metre tall plant.

The plant is outside Jermyns House and is in its final stages of flowering but is still well worth a visit.
